MARY JO FRESCH is a Professor at The Ohio State University at Marion, School of Teaching and Learning where she teaches graduate courses in literacy and children's literature. Dr. Fresch earned a BS in Elementary Education and a MS Ed (Reading Specialist) from the University of Akron. She earned her PhD (Reading, Language and Literature) from The Ohio State University. She taught Developmental Reading at the University of Akron, Reading Methods at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and literacy and children's literature courses at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Deakin University (both in Melbourne, Australia where she lived for three years). She joined the faculty at The Ohio State University at Marion in 1995. |
| Her research focus is the developmental aspects of becoming a speller and its relationship to teaching and learning. Her articles have appeared in The Reading Teacher, Reading Online, Language Arts, Journal of Literacy Research, Reading and Writing Quarterly, Reading Psychology, Reading Horizons and several International Reading Association state journals. She recently edited An essential history of current reading practices (published by International Reading Association) and is co-author of Teaching and Assessing Spelling, The Spelling List and Word Study Resource Book (both Scholastic) and a grades 1 through 6 classroom spelling series, Spelling for Writers (Great Source). Her new book focuses on using picture books in the middle school and will be published by National Council of Teachers of English in November.
